The Cathedral of Siracusa, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, stands on the island of Ortigia, the cultural and historical heart of the city. The cathedral was built directly over the remains of an ancient Greek temple to Athena, its columns still visible incorporated into the structure’s walls.
This layering of Greek, Roman, and Christian history makes the cathedral a striking symbol of Siracusa’s long story of faith. Pilgrims celebrate Mass here, in a building that has served as a place of worship for well over two thousand years, replacing the pagan gods of ancient Greece with the Christian faith that eventually took root across Sicily.
