“UPON THIS ROCK!”

When the Las Vegas Council selected this wonderful theme, we were not in a pandemic. When we decided to open the weekend on Thursday evening with ROSARY UNDER THE STARS, there was no COVID. When we wished to show not merely VEGAS, but the geological wonderland of Las Vegas, by hiking in the Red Rock Canyon, there was no vaccine. When the galvanizing theme, “MOSAIC OF LAS VEGAS” was created and scripted, there were no masks. When we said Las Vegas is not the media’s “sin city” but one of the nation’s fastest growing Catholic Dioceses, there was no term called “social distancing”.
And yet, from September 30th to October 4th, more than 500 amazing members of the Western Lieutenancy of the EOHSJ found their way to the Red Rock Resort and Holy Spirit Church to say to ALL: We are the Dames and Knights of the EOHSJ and we will not be stopped; we heed the words of our Lord…Take Courage…Be Not Afraid…It Is I!
For those who attended this blessed Annual Meeting we have had an unprecedented chorus of “our hearts are still joyful!” For those who could not attend, we hope you seek out friends who did, so they may share their experiences from the camaraderie of fellow members.
As for the highlights…they are in the hearts and minds of those who attended. It is not for this article…words on paper cannot match the breath of words from one of the 500!
Yet, we will quote three folks from both spectrums of the Order who can best sum up this conference. First, from a new investee member…”for two years I was in formation (COVID!). The Invitation to Formation was my foundation, but even it could not prepare me for the sheer awe I felt for my God and the awe of my responsibility as a member of the Order.” Second, from a couple who have been members of the Order for 23 years and are KGCHS and DGCHS…”thank you WL and LV Council for not only reigniting our hearts and souls, but giving the spiritual fuel to burn hotter for our Order.”
As Area Councillors, we wish to express our GRATITUDE to the entire LV Council. Most especially, we express our THANKS to our two leaders: Bishop George Leo Thomas, KC*HS and his Auxiliary Bishop, Bishop Greg Gordon, KC*HS. Their support, strength and love for the Order and Council always move us forward!

Blessings in His Joyful Abundance,
Dame Connie and Sir Joseph Micatrotto
Area Co-Councillors for the Diocese of Las Vegas

On September 27th through October 1st, Bishop Kevin Vann, Honorary Chair of the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Western Lieutenancy, hosted 564 Knights, Dames, Clergy, and candidates for investiture. The meeting was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel located in Garden Grove. Our theme was “Pilgrims Together”.

For the fourth year in a row, we featured the Ministry Fair. At this Fair, members learned about the exciting developments of the ministries that we support.

The weekend began on Thursday with a Spiritual Pilgrimage to St. John Maron Catholic Church in Orange. This was the first time that members of the Order participated in an Eastern Rite Maronite Liturgy. The evening included Mass, special prayers, and sharing of a delicious Middle Eastern dinner. After dinner, Msgr. Antoine Bakh spoke about the differences and similarities between the Roman and the Eastern Rites and fielded questions from the 120 knights and dames in attendance.

Friday began with golf at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club and a docent tour of the Christ Cathedral campus. At the docent tour, Bishop Kevin Vann and Bishop Thomas Nguyen surprised the members with a visit and led a construction job site tour of the new Cathedral where workers greeted us.

Friday afternoon, Bishop Marc Trudeau celebrated the Traveler’s Mass at the hotel to a full house of about 400 members. The evening concluded with retreats for investees, promotees, and the general membership. The investee retreat was at the Christ Cathedral’s beautiful “Chapel in the Sky”.

The promotee retreat took place at the historic St. Catherine Academy. About 125 members attended the Order retreat at the hotel.

Saturday Promotion and Memorial Mass

Saturday morning, Bishop Timothy Freyer celebrated the Promotions and Memorial Mass in the Arboretum at Christ Cathedral. Fifty six members were promoted.

After lunch at the hotel, members attended the educational forum and listened to His Excellency Sir Patrick Powers, Vice Governor General, North America, who highlighted his 25 years of dedication to the Order by sharing his first-hand experiences. Click here to read his presentation.

Saturday night’s treat was the much-anticipated festive event: “Family Style at the Park” dinner and dancing. Everyone had fun with the food, drinks, music and dancing.

Saturday Night Dinner

Sunday began bright and early with visits to the Adoration Chapel and Confessions. Sunday morning highlighted an all Member Business Meeting and brunch.

Sunday Investiture

In the afternoon, Archbishop Jose Gomez celebrated the Investiture Mass at St. Boniface Church in Anaheim; he invested 21 knights and 24 dames.

The formal reception and Grand Ball took place at the hotel where members delighted on an elegant dinner and dancing.

Sunday Grand Ball

The Annual Meeting ended on Monday with early morning visits to the Adoration Chapel followed by the Traveler’s Mass and Rosary celebrated by our host, Bishop Kevin Vann. About 350 knights, dames and clergy were in attendance.

Happy ‘Lead Pilgrims’

Many thanks to the entire Annual Meeting Planning Committee for their hard work, dedication and creativity; they made the event a success.

Our Lady Queen of Palestine, pray for us!
