Preserving the Sacred: A Visit to Gaza and the Holy Land

In a time of profound crisis, the enduring presence of the Church provides a beacon of hope for those remaining in the Holy Land.

The recent pastoral visit by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, underscores his administration’s unwavering commitment to the survival and flourishing of Christian communities in Gaza. Beyond immediate humanitarian relief, the Latin Patriarchate remains a cornerstone of institutional stability, spearheading critical financial support and logistical resources necessary to maintain both the presence and spiritual life of the faithful.

Accompanied by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Cardinal’s program was to visit with priests, religious and families, along with the historical Christian sites in the area.

The situation remains difficult, the Cardinal said, but the presence of Church leaders demonstrates the attention and concern the Churches continue to devote to Gaza, which remains a priority.

For those within the EOHSJ, this visit highlights a vital commonality: the shared responsibility of safeguarding the Holy Land for future generations. Support for the Latin Patriarchate is not merely an act of external charity; it is a necessary investment in the preservation of the spiritual landscape of Jerusalem and Gaza, ensuring that the “Living Stones” of our faith remain anchored in this sacred ground.
