PILGRIMAGE HIGHLIGHTS:

Rome

  • Basilica of St. Paul and Tre Fontane, traditional site of Paul’s execution
  • Catacombs of St. Calixtus, burial grounds for early Christians
  • Via Appia Antica – the ancient Roman road begun in 312 BC, likely traveled by Paul
  • View the Ancient Roman Forum and Colosseum
  • Mamertine prison, traditional site of imprisonment of
  • St. Peter and St. Paul before their martyrdom under Emperor Nero
  • Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, with mosaics from 12th and 13th century

Malta

  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha
  • St. Paul’s Bay, traditional site of St. Paul’s shipwreck
  • St. Paul’s Church in Rabat, built over the site where St. Paul stayed for three months in 60 AD. The site has been visited by Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and Pope Francis
  • Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral, whose mural portrays the storm that led to Paul’s shipwreck
  • Gozo, Malta’s sister island: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu plus Ggantija Temples, a megalithic temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Sicily

  • Siracusa – where Paul spent three days after departing Malta (Acts 28: 11-13) and one of the greatest cities in the world in ancient time
  • Visit Catacombs of St. John and Ortigia Island, home to the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity of Mary, one of Italy’s most beautiful churches, built on the foundation of Greek temple
  • Catania – second largest city in Sicily
  • Monreale – Cathedral of St. Mary, one of the greatest examples of Norman architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Palermo –Visit the Church of St. Mary of Jesus, a Baroque-style, Jesuit Church, plus view the Norman Palace
