Mass of Ordination to the Order of Deacon
June 24, 2026
The Diocese of Tucson EOHSJ took part in the Ordination of five Deacons at Saint John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in Yuma, Arizona on 14 June 2026.
Most Reverend James A. Misko, Bishop of Tucson was the Celebrant. A deacon ordination is the Catholic Church’s sacramental rite in which a man is ordained to the Order of Deacons, committing his life to service, charity, and the proclamation of the Gospel. It unfolds within Mass and centers on the bishop’s call, the candidate’s public promises, and the gift of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. The bishop places the Book of the Gospels in the deacon’s hands with the charge: “Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.”
In his homily Bishop Misko asked the new Deacons not to be afraid of the “construction site of our time”. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Today is your first day laboring on the construction site. You have chosen to be caretakers and custodians of the Body of Christ. Your call is to serve every person in need. The Order of Deacons has three ministries:
1) Serve as the Ordinary of the Liturgy, especially the end of Mass with the proclamation of “go forth and share the good news of the Lord.”
2) Be heralds of the Gospel as you proclaim the word of God. Every person you meet is now your pastoral concern.
3) You are now a minister of charity sharing God’s love. Respect the struggle of the poor. Protect God’s people, his treasure as your go forth and share your ministry.
The Diocese of Tucson Deacon class of 2026 included fourteen Deacons. Nine Deacons were Ordained on 30 May 2026 at Saint Augustine Cathedral in Tucson, Arizona. Congratulations to Deacon Sir Randi Burros, KHS of Saint Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Sierra, Vista, Arizona as he was ordained, and is now a Clergy Knight of the Equestrian Order.
