Tucson – Red and Blue Mass

Knights and Dames from the Diocese of Tucson took part in the Red and Blue Mass at Saint Augustine Cathedral on October 20, 2025. Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, Apostolic Administrator Diocese of Tucson was the presiding Celebrant. The entrance procession with Knights and Dames adds solemnity to these special Masses.

The Catholic Red Mass is a solemn liturgical celebration traditionally held to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit on those who serve in the legal profession—judges, lawyers, lawmakers, and government officials. The Red Mass is not a political event but a spiritual one, reminding legal professionals of their vocation’s ethical and moral dimensions. It blends civic responsibility with spiritual reflection, emphasizing that law should serve truth and human dignity.

The Catholic Blue Mass is celebrated to honor those in the public safety field—including police, firefighters, EMS personnel, correctional officers, and 911 dispatchers. It expresses gratitude for their service. It serves as a public witness to the Church’s support for justice, peace, and the common good.

In his Homily Bishop Kicanas reflected on how to live life well and with joy. While everyone may strive to be important and recognized, the word tells us the greatest is the one who serves. Always open your eyes to see where love is needed. Serving begins with tending to the littlest and weakest among us. Be attentive to others and open our eyes to see love. He ended his Homily asking that we hear the words of everlasting life.

Thank you to the Saint Thomas More Society for inviting the Order to take part in this special Mass.
